Gov David Patterson is going to cut(job cuts) 8,900 jobs from the state payroll to help balance the state budget. These layoffs will affect many workers and is truly sad. These job cuts will be made through layoffs and attrition when someone retires or quits. Losing your job can be a trying experience for any employee and well paid state employees are no different.
This is the first time a governor in New York State had to lay someone off since the budget crisis that occurred in the 1990s.
These job cuts will begin this summer and over a two year period save the state $481 millions dollars.
On the bright side the state is trying to work with labor unions to lower the number impacted by job cuts through other ideas on how the state can save money, and help the budget.
Cutting jobs may be a temporary solution but I have to ask why are we needing to make job cuts now Gov Patterson? Why were these 8,900 people hired in the first place? If we can do without them now, they must not have been that critical of a need when they were hired.
Why are we not worried about state budget in good times when we just hire away. Hire more and more employees?
